Reflections for Survivors

Am I the best I can be?

Learning About My Brain Injury and Being Honest with Myself

  1. What else can I learn about my brain injury?
  2. Would I benefit from attending or, if necessary, forming a support group?
  3. Would I benefit from reading about how other survivors face their challenges?
  4. What have I learned from my successes and my disappointments?
  5. Can I acknowledge that some of my impairments will be permanent?
  6. What compensatory strategies or devices can I use to make my life better?
  7. Can I tell people, without being embarrassed, that I have a brain injury, when such information would make my life easier?

Developing Mutually Beneficial Relationships

  1. Could I ask my family and friends to learn more about brain injury?
  2. Do I ask for help when I need it?
  3. Am I respectful and considerate of the time and effort people spend helping me?
  4. Do I ask for help when I don’t really need it?
  5. Are there things I can do to become more independent?
  6. Am I lonely? What can I do to make new friends?

Maintaining a Positive Attitude

  1. Do I try to be grateful for what I have, rather than dwelling on my misfortune?
  2. Do I remind myself often that recovery can be a slow process?
  3. Am I able to celebrate progress—however small?
  4. Do I believe that I can continue to progress indefinitely?
  5. Do I recognize—and refuse to be troubled—that some people will misunderstand me because they misunderstand brain injury?
  6. Can I lean on my faith for strength and comfort?

Living a Healthy Life

  1. Do I seek all appropriate medical care?
  2. Do I follow the instructions of my medical team?
  3. Do I exercise regularly?
  4. Do I undermine my recovery by using alcohol and recreational drugs?
  5. Do I undermine my recovery by excessively blaming myself or someone else who contributed to my injury?
  6. Do I take too many risks, leaving myself vulnerable to accidents?
  7. Do I allow myself to be taken advantage of by others?
  8. Would I benefit from seeing a professional counselor, preferably one who knows brain injury?

Living a Full Life

  1. Have I explored all avenues to financial security?
  2. Do I challenge myself often enough?
  3. Should I set some new goals for myself?
  4. Is there an activity or two that I particularly enjoy? Do I pursue these activities vigorously?
  5. Do I get out of the house and mix with people regularly?
  6. Are there activities, such as volunteering, that will allow me to feel more a part of the community?
